Istanbul – Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW) Information

Introduction

The airport is situated on the Asian (eastern) side of the Bosporus, about 45kms southeast of the heart of the old city of Istanbul on the European (western) side of the strait. Two terminals within walking distance of each other handle domestic flights as well as international flights from all parts of the world. The airport honours Sabiha Gökçen, the first female fighter pilot in the world. The larger of Istanbul’s two airports, Istanbul Ataturk Airport, is located west of the city.

A car park in front of the international terminal will accommodate 407 cars. The car park for the domestic terminal holds 100. Fees are €1.80 for the first hour, €3.60 for up to 3 hours, and €9 per day. Each additional day costs €4.50.

Getting to and from Istanbul

If driving to Istanbul, a 1.5km access road connects with the TEM (04) motorway; this leads directly into the city. There is regular bus service to Istanbul as well as to other area destinations including the Sea Bus jetty in Pendik (4kms from the airport) and the Pendik railway station (also 4kms). Taxis are on hand outside the arrivals hall. The fare to Istanbul can range as high as €60, depending on one’s bargaining skills.

Amenities at Istanbul International Airport

The arrivals hall of the international terminal has a bank (open 9:00-18:00), ATMs and a post office. Also in the international terminal are a duty-free shop selling spirits, tobacco and perfumes; a shop specializing in cellular telephones and accessories; and a mini-market. Three cafés can be found on the mezzanine and in halls A and B of the international terminal, and one café in the departures lounge of the domestic terminal.
