Monastir – Habib Bourguiba International Airport (MIR) information

Introduction

Situated on Tunisia’s Mediterranean coast, Monastir International Airport has grown greatly in recent years to accommodate the area’s increasing popularity as a tourist destination. Some 3 million travellers pass through the airport each year. In addition to domestic flights, there are regularly scheduled international flights to France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Russia and other countries in Europe. Charter flights account for a major percentage of the airport’s traffic, with most originating in the UK, Spain, and northern and eastern Europe. The airport is located 9kms from the town of Monastir.

A 600-space car park is situated in front of the terminal building. Fees are €0.30 per day for cars.

Getting to and from Monastir

By car, the town of Monastir is about a 20-minute drive on the main road. To the north, 20kms along the coast road, is the resort area of Sousse. From there, the main road inland leads to the 9th-century holy city of Kairouan, the “city of 50 mosques,” about an hour’s drive (67kms) away. Buses depart from the airport every 60 minutes for Monastir, Sousse and other nearby destinations. The fare to Monastir is €0.30. Metered taxis are also available at the airport for transport to Monastir (€1.25) and elsewhere.

There are five currency exchange desks in the landside hall, and an ATM on the ground floor. A 24-hour first-aid station is situated on the ground floor, as is a post office. The terminal has both duty-free and regular shops selling a variety of luxury items and souvenirs. Several restaurants and bars are available for light meals and refreshments.
