South Africa Airports

Despite South Africa’s troubles over the past few decades, it continues to grow as a tourist destination. People come here for the sparkling beaches, snazzy cities, bags of sunshine and vast savannah. However, one of the greatest attractions here is Table Mountain, which offers fantastic views of Cape Town and beyond, while the city of Johannesburg is also a big draw, as is the nearby township of Soweto.

Located on the east coast, Durban is a bustling town with great entertainment options as well as some fantastic beaches for surfing. Between Johannesburg and Cape Town is the interesting town of Kimberley, a former colonial village made famous by the diamond industry.

Air travel within South Africa is ideal for long journeys as car hire is expensive and using public transport can be time consuming. South Africa has two dozen airports including a number of international terminals.

Johannesburg International Airport is South Africa’s leading airport and the main gateway into the country, handling about 12-million passengers per year. There are six terminals here, with terminals 1, 2 and 6 dealing with international flights and terminals 3, 4 and 5 with domestic traffic. There are currently around 60 carriers operating from the airport. Private bus companies, minibuses, hotel shuttles and taxis serve the city and hotels in the area.

Cape Town International Airport is a highly modernised airport with superb facilities and services, and it handles more than four-million passengers every year. The airport is located just over 10 miles to the east of Cape Town and has flights to and from numerous cities around the world including London, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, and Singapore; some flights make a short stop in Johannesburg. Shuttles and taxis provide transport to the city and its hotels.
