Cape Town International Airport (CPT) Information
Introduction
Situated 22kms east of Cape Town, this airport is the second-busiest in South Africa. More than 5 million passengers per year pass through the airport, which is a prime tourism gateway for the Western Cape region. There are scheduled direct flights to 23 cities in 19 countries including the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Singapore and the United States. A new international arrivals terminal opened in 2001, and a new international departures terminal with 68 check-in counters opened in 2003. Shuttle buses run between the domestic and international terminals; the fare is €15.
The 2005 World Airport Awards, based on a passenger survey of airport standards, named Cape Town the best airport in Africa, and the number one airport in the world in the category friendliest staff.
Airport parking at Cape Town
Shaded parking is offered along the entire facade of the terminal complex. Complimentary shuttles provide transport between the car park area and the terminals. Fees are €1.50 for up to 2 hours, €5.30 per day, and €17 per week. Valet parking and lock-up garages are available as well, for about €13 per day. (A multi-storey parking building is scheduled for completion in 2006.)
Getting to and from Cape Town
The airport is situated on the N2 highway, which leads directly into Cape Town (journey time, 25 minutes). Door-to-door shuttle bus service is available; schedules vary according to flight timetables. Taxis, both unauthorized and authorized (Touch Down Taxis), are plentiful as well.
Amenities at Cape Town International Airport
Financial services are offered by a bank in the international departures hall, and several ATMs and bureaux de change in both the international and domestic areas of the airport. There is a post office in domestic arrivals, and Premier executive lounges (pay-per-visit) in both international and domestic departures areas. Twenty shops in the international terminal and seven in the domestic terminal sell regional products including diamonds and wine, plus sweets, tobacco, books, fashions, souvenirs and curios. Ten bars and caf�©s offer an assortment of dining options.
