Portugal Airports

Although Portugal is well known the world over for its production of port and cork, the Algarve is its greatest asset in terms of income due to the hordes of holidaymakers who inhabit this glorious stretch of southern coastline every summer. There is great charm in the country’s interior as well, owing to quaint whitewashed villages and rolling landscapes.

Portugal has more than a dozen major and regional airports that provide easy access to not-so-easy-to-reach parts of the country. The roads in Portugal leave a lot to be desired and the public transport situation isn’t the best in Europe.

Portugal’s Lisbon International Airport is the most important in the country and it is fed by many international carriers, with connections to destinations as far afield as North and South America. Domestic flights also feature heavily at Lisbon. A convenient network of buses run to the city and back, while the centre of Lisbon is also easily accessible by motorway.

Faro International Airport in the south is Portugal’s second most important airport, with millions of passengers travelling through it every year on there way to and from the Algarve. The airport’s single terminal is modern and well equipped, providing domestic, intercontinental and international flights. Situated not far from the centre of Faro, buses, daily shuttles and taxis run to the city and farther afield, while those with booked accommodation on the Algarve will often qualify for a free transfer.

Santa Maria Airport on the island of the same name in the Azores is a small single-terminal facility that receives flights from the Portuguese mainland and is located near to the island’s main town of Vila do Porto. Buses and taxis run all over the island from the airport.

Situated in the northwest near the town of Oporto, Francisco Sa Carneiro International Airport is a pleasant single-terminal airport with great facilities and flights to and from 30 destinations, both domestic and international. Buses and shuttles run to the city and its hotels in the daytime, while taxis run on a 24-hour basis.
