Ponta Delgada - João Paulo II Airport (PDL) information

Introduction

Situated less than 3kms west of the city of Ponta Delgada, this airport is the busiest in the Azores Islands with annual passenger traffic of 775,000. Joao Paulo II Airport is located on the island of São Miguel, in the Atlantic Ocean 1,200kms west of Portugal. Regularly scheduled domestic flights link the island with the other Azores Islands and Madeira, plus Lisbon and Porto on the mainland. International flights arrive and depart for such destinations as Munich, Zurich, New York, Boston, Toronto and Montreal. One terminal caters for all domestic and international flights.

Airport parking at Ponta Delgada

There are two car parks at the airport, designated P1 and P2. Short-term parking near the terminal is found in P1, with fees of €0.59 for 30 minutes, and a daily rate of €7. Fees for long-term parking in P2 are €0.52 per hour and €5 per day, with each additional day €1.50.

Getting to and from Ponta Delgada

The airport is situated on the main ER1-1a roadway, which encircles the island. Ponta Delgada city centre is a five-minute drive to the east. Public buses depart for the Avenida Marginal de Ponta Delgada every hour. Taxis are also on call 24 hours a day.

ATMs, currency exchange facilities and a bank are located in the terminal’s public zone. There is also a post office and a first-aid station (open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 17:00). Shops in the airport feature regional handicrafts and ceramics, cosmetics, tobacco, travel-related items, and international newspapers and magazines. Light refreshments are offered at a snack bar. The airport’s CIP Lounge is available for use on request (a fee per user is levied).
