Bali (Denpasar) – Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) information

Introduction

The airport is situated near Bali’s southern tip, 13kms southwest of Denpasar and 2.5kms south of the beach resort area of Kuta. Two terminals, one for international flights and one for domestic flights, are within walking distance of each other. The airport is one of Indonesia’s chief tourist hubs, handling more than 4.5 million passengers per year. There are scheduled flights to 23 international destinations including Australia and New Zealand, Singapore, Bangkok, Taipei, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Honolulu, Frankfurt and Amsterdam.

Airport parking at Bali

One large car park situated next to the terminal buildings can accommodate 2,000 vehicles.

Getting to and from Bali

If driving from the airport, the main road to Denpasar (a 20-minute journey) is well sign-posted. Kuta is just a few minutes away by road, but can also be reached by a stroll down the beach. Buses run frequently between Denpasar’s Tegal bus station and the airport (journey time, 50 minutes). The Airport Taxi Service, to the left of the terminal exit, charges fixed rates to a variety of local destinations; prices are displayed on a board outside the terminal. Other taxis may or may not have meters, and fares will most likely involve some haggling. Another cost-effective option is travelling by “bemo,” a vehicle which can carry up to 10 persons. Since bemos must pay a fee to enter the airport grounds, they often congregate just outside the gates, a short walk from the terminal.

Amenities at Bali Airport

Essential facilities include a bank, an ATM and a currency exchange bureau (although rates may be more favorable in town). Other amenities include a pharmacy, and a post office in domestic departures. A variety of shops serve the airport including the duty-free Plaza Bali in international departures, which offers fashions from Hermes, Fendi and Burberry. Balinese-themed restaurants, cafés and fast-food outlets are open from 6:00 until the evening’s last flight.
