Greece is one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations owing to its many hours of sun and vast collections of beautiful islands. Travel within Greece can often be frustrating as much of the public transportation system is either unreliable or slow compared with Western Europe, while the mountainous terrain and many islands means travel within the country by plane is often the best option.

Athens-Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport is the country’s busiest air hub serving European and American destinations. Also the hub of domestic travel, Athens Airport has one main terminal and is located 15 miles northeast of downtown Athens. A new railway, buses, shuttles and taxis provide transport to the city.

The basic yet modern Corfu Island International Airport is situated only a couple of miles from the city and receives at least three flights per day from Athens. One terminal handles both international and domestic flights, largely serviced by major Greek carriers. A regular bus service runs to Corfu Town, although many visitors will have their transport pre-arranged when travelling on a package holiday.

Rhodes International Airport is located right on the northern tip of Rhodes Island and is a little airport that gets busy in the summer months, serving the droves of holidaymakers who come in search of the island’s beautiful beaches. The airport’s single terminal serves both domestic and international flights arriving and departing mainly from Europe and the Middle East. Buses and shuttles run to Rhodes Town and across the island, while taxis are also available.

Kefalonia is also a popular summer getaway and its airport handles an impressive 400,000 domestic passengers per year. There are just three check-in desks at Kefalonia Island National Airport single terminal, which is situated only a few minutes from the capital of Argostoli. There are no buses to the capital, but taxis and hotel shuttles provide regular transport.
