Munich International Airport (MUC) Information

Introduction

With 26 million passengers per year, Munich International Airport (also known as Franz Josef Strauss Airport) ranks as Germany’s second largest and the eighth largest in Europe. The airport’s growth in recent years is largely due to the German airline Lufthansa’s expansion of its services in Munich. A second terminal was added in 2003. The airport is located 28kms northeast of Munich.

The 2005 World Airport Awards named Munich the best airport in Europe and the fourth-best airport in the world, based on a passenger survey of airport standards.

Airport parking at Munich International Airport

Short-term parking is provided in underground car parks P1, P2, P3, P4 and P9 (one week maximum). Multi-storey car parks P6, P7, P8, P20 and P25 offer long-term parking, as does the P26 underground car park at the airport hotel. All car parks have direct access to the terminals. Car park P41 at Nordallee offers weekly rates and is connected to the terminals by a free shuttle bus. Other car parks include the remote car park P51, and a visitors’ car park P53. Valet parking is also available.

Getting to and from Munich International Airport

The airport is just off the A92 Munich-Deggendorf autobahn, which connects with the A99 Munich ring road. From there, several major roadways lead into the city. S-Bahn trains depart from the airport every 20 minutes for Munich’s Hauptbahnhof and Ostbahnhof railway stations (travel time, 41 and 49 minutes, respectively; one-way fare, €9). From these stations, travellers may transfer to mainline and regional services of the German railway system. Bus and coach lines also run to Munich and surrounding areas. The Autobus Oberbayern offers connections with Munich’s Hauptbahnhof, a 45-minute journey; departures are every 20 minutes. Taxis are available as well for the 45-minute trip into the city centre.

Amenities at Munich International Airport

ATMs, banks and currency exchange booths may be found throughout the airport. There is also a post office, a 24-hour medical centre and pharmacy, a dentist, a dry cleaning and laundry service, and a children’s play area. Wireless LAN is available throughout the airport as well. For those with a few hours to spare, the airport’s visitor’s park has activities for the whole family such as a movie ride theatre and an exhibition of historic aircraft. Both terminals have a wide variety of shops, both duty-free and regular, offering fashions, gifts and souvenirs, toys, perfumes and cosmetics, shoes and leather goods, jewellery, watches and electronics. There is an excellent range of restaurants, fast-food outlets, coffee bars, juice bars, and beer and wine bars. The Munich Airport Centre provides conference and other business facilities, plus VIP services and relaxation rooms.
