It set a new record for passengers handled in 2004, topping 50 million. The airport has scheduled connections to 296 airports in 105 countries. Not only is Frankfurt a popular destination in itself, but it is also an important air transfer point to many other countries in Eastern Europe and Asia. A second terminal was opened in 1994, and plans are under way for a third terminal to handle the increased traffic. Free shuttle trains and buses run between the terminals. Frankfurt Airport is located 12kms southwest of the city centre.Airport parking at Frankfurt International AirportThere are parking spaces for 15,000 vehicles at the airport’s various multi-storey and underground car parks, all of which provide direct access to the terminals. Car parks P1-P5 serve Terminal 1, while car parks P8 and P9 serve Terminal 2. There are spaces reserved exclusively for women drivers in P1, P4 and P5. Parking with enhanced security is available as well.Getting to and from Frankfurt International AirportEurope’s busiest expressway cloverleaf, the Frankfurter Kreuz, is adjacent to the airport. This intersection of the A3 (Cologne-Munich) and A5 (Hannover-Basel) autobahns allows easy automobile access to Frankfurt and other area destinations. The airport has two railway stations. The long-distance station is next to Terminal 1, linked by a connector building. High-speed trains run to Cologne (1 hour) and Stuttgart (1 hour and 15 minutes). The local S-Bahn railway station is located in Terminal 1, level 1. From here, trains depart for Frankfurt’s Hauptbahnhof (central station) and many other regional destinations. Buses depart for Frankfurt and other area cities from outside the arrivals level of both terminals. Taxis are also readily available; journey time to the city centre is 20 to 30 minutes and costs about €20.Amenities at Frankfurt International AirportThe airport has banks in 18 locations, 16 currency exchange booths, and numerous ATMs. Both terminals have post offices as well. The airport has more than 130 shops, including duty-free and 24-hour newsagents. There is also an extensive array of bars, restaurants and cafés, many of which are open 24 hours. Additional amenities include a 24-hour medical centre, a hair salon and an airport casino.
