Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) Information

Introduction

Known by locals as Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong International Airport is located 25 miles to the west of the city of Hong Kong. The single terminal facility is large and frequently crowded since its an important hub for a large portion of China and South East Asia. A large number of both domestic and international flights arrive at and depart from the airport on a daily basis. Allegedly the worlds largest enclosed space, the terminal building facilitates the speedy movement of its passengers via an internal shuttle system that runs from the East Hall to the West Hall.

Airport parking at Hong Kong

Passengers will find a mighty 3,000 parking spaces at the airport, spread over one long-term and two short-term parking facilities, curiously named Car Park 1 and car parks 4 and 5 respectively. The open-air short-term Car Park 1 is situated closest to the terminal building and is connected to Car Park 5 via a shuttle service, which operates every 10 minutes. Car Park 4 is also situated near the terminal and requires no shuttle connection.

Getting to and from the airport

Drivers bound for the airport from Hong Kong Island should follow signs for the Western Harbour Tunnel and then continue along the West Kowloon Expressway, from where signs will direct you across the Tsing Ma Bridge onto the North Lantau Highway and finally to the airport itself. Ground transportation options are plentiful; the Airport Express rail service connects the airport with Hong Kong Island, while the Airport ferry operates services between Chek Lap Kok and Tuen Mun. Meanwhile, bus services are numerous, running to Hong Kong destinations as well as Kowloon, Discovery Bay and the Northern Territories. Taxis are also available from beside the Ground Transportation Centre.

Essential amenities at the airport include three bureaux de change and six ATMs distributed throughout the terminal. For dining and shopping, theres a huge selection of restaurants on-hand, totalling nearly 150 outlets. The Mezzanine on Level 8 has a number of good restaurants and boasts good views of the Departures Hall. Elsewhere, duty-free, newsagents, gift and specialty outlets are available.

For business travellers, the PCCW HKT Business Centre is on-hand, offering mobile phone rental, internet connection and faxing services. Airport authority information counters are located on levels 5 and 7, while Hong Kong Tourist Board counters are situated in the Transit Hall and on Level 5.
