China Airports

China is one of the world’s largest countries and although it has a good road and transport infrastructure, mountainous terrain and vast distances between centres means that travelling within the country by plane is the only feasible option for those with limited time. China has numerous airports, many of which are simple, one-terminal structures with a limited number of arrivals and departures, while most major urban centres come with an international facility.

Known locally as Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong International Airport is China’s busiest airport, handling close to 40-million passengers per year and receiving dozens of international carriers daily. The airport consists of one terminal that handles both international and domestic flights, and an internal shuttle service is provided.

Chek Lap Kok is located on an island quite far from the city, but public transport to and from the airport is excellent, with the Airport Express rail service providing fast access to Hong Kong as well as numerous bus and ferry services.

Beijing Capital International Airport is situated northeast of Beijing and is China’s second busiest airport, with 20-million passengers per year going through its gates. There are two terminals here operating flights to destinations around the globe including Europe, Asia and the United States. The Airport-City Shuttle Bus offers an extensive service to popular tourist destinations around the city as well as major hotels, while taxis are also widely available.

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is a busy air hub situated just outside of Shanghai and it receives many of the world’s top airlines. There is just one terminal that looks in need of updating, yet it comfortably handles 12-million passengers per year. To get to the city, there is an extensive network of bus routes, while hotel shuttles and taxis also operate.
