Rio de Janeiro-Galeao International Airport (GIG) Information

Introduction

Also known as Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport, Rio de Janeiro-Galeao Airport was Brazil’s major air hub until 1985, when Guarulhos International Airport took its place. Currently, the airport serves roughly 4.5 million passengers per year, with connections to a range of South American destinations and major cities farther afield. The airport consists of two terminal buildings and is located approximately 14 miles north of central Rio de Janeiro, on Governador Island.

Multi-level parking garages are located close to the terminals, affording easy access to the airport building. Additional, covered and uncovered parking areas are situated a short walk from the terminals, offering both short-term and long-term parking spaces.

Getting to and from the airport

Two major roads – Avenida Brasil and Linha Vermelha - link the airport with Rio de Janeiro city centre, with both routes clearly signposted. Rental cars are available from the airport and taxis can be hailed from outside the terminal buildings. The best way to avoid being overcharged is to purchase a pre-paid taxi ticket at the Rio de Janeiro State Tourism Authority counter. Airport shuttles provide transfers to major hotels and beach areas, while public buses offer regular transportation to the city centre, departing every 30 minutes between 06:00 and 21:00.

Amenities at Rio de Janeiro-Galeao International Airport

A limited range of eateries and shops can be found in Terminal 1, with a wider selection of restaurants, cafés and retail stores located in the central commercial area of Terminal 2. Terminal 1 encompasses a number of banks and a currency exchange counter, while the airport’s Luxor Hotel provides conference and business amenities.

A left luggage facility, postal and first-aid services are available 24 hours a day and a small hospital is situated in Terminal 1. Disabled passengers are catered for at Rio de Janeiro-Galeao International Airport with lifts, automatic doors and specially adapted telephones and toilets.

Infraero information counters are located on the second level of the blue area in Terminal 1 and on the Departures level of Terminal 2. Additionally, Terminal 2 features computerised information screens.
